What is the Shelter? The Shelter is a Safe Haven for women and children who suffer from domestic abuse (see What is domestic violence?). The Shelter houses an infirmary, a children's activity room, a training room and library, along with regular living quarters. Residents usually stay between three and six months at The Shelter. During this time residents receive therapeutic counseling and are encouraged to acquire marketable skills. The Shelter provides necessary skills training. Page Contents: In response to greater awareness of domestic violence and a growing need for support of victims of domestic violence The Shelter was established in 1987. The safe house property was granted to the Shelter by the Trinidad & Tobago government. Since the inception additional bedding and staff quarters have been installed, as well as a library, sewing room, counseling room and children's room. As a registered charity, The Shelter is run by an Executive Committee of Volunteers (see Profile of Executive Committee). It receives an annual subvention from the Government as well as support from private companies and members of the public. The major corporate sponsor is J.B. Fernandes Memorial Trust Fund I & II. Ongoing support has been received from the following in both cash and kind.
