Established in 1987, The Shelter was a response to a growing awareness of domestic violence and a greater need for support of victims of domestic violence. Support for this cause came from the Trinidad & Tobago government in the form of the property on which the safe house exists.
Since that time additional bedding and staff quarters, as well as a library, sewing room, counselling room and children's room have been installed.
As a registered charity, The Shelter is run by an Executive Committee of Volunteers. We receive an annual subvention from the Government as well as support from private companies and members of the public.
